UNIT ONE: DEFINITIO OF THE INTERNET

4.1.1. DEFINITION OF THE INTERNET

The internet is a group of networked computers that are stationed in different parts of the world etc- Lagos, India, England, United States, Jalingo, Kano, South Africa. These computers contain data and information such as texts, documents, images, pictures, videos, software's etc which are shared among them.

4.1.2. WORLD WIDE WEB

World Wide Web (WWW) is a group of resources or items such as books, journals, etc that linked together and hosted on the internet. Such documents are most often referred to as hypertext documents.

4.1.3. WEBSITE

Web sites are sites on the internet which can be considered as stores used by different people, organizations to place or display their products or services- texts, documents, pictures, videos, etc on the internet. Such products and services can be accessed free of change or by paying certain amount of money.

4.1.4. BENEFITS OF THE INTERNET

The internet has brought tremendous improvement to the lives of man. It has affected the way human beings perform their activities in all spheres of life, from personal life style, education to business. Some of ways by which the internet has improved peoples life are in areas of:
4.1.4.1. Information exchange
4.1.4.2. Education
4.1.4.3.  E-entertainment
4.1.4.4. E-business
4.1.4.5. E-governance

4.1.4.1.  Information exchange

The internet is one of the most important sources of data and information. There are various individuals, organizations, institutions who placed different types of data and information in form of books, journals, personal interviews, softwares, pictures, videos, etc on the internet.  Such data and information can be accessed, and retrieved by any person in any part of the world free or  at times minimal cost.

4.1.4.2. Education

Education is one of the important sectors influenced by the internet. Some of the areas in which internet is beneficial are:

1. E-learning
2. Computer Aided Instruction sing etc, Computer Aided learning
3. Video conferencing
4. Resources- books, journals, softwares, online classrooms, digital library etc
5. Collaboration on research and resources sharing
