1.4. CLASSIFICATION BY VERSATILITY Based on their versatility, computers are classified into two groups, namely 1.4.1. General purpose 1.4.2. Special purpose 1.4.1. General purpose General purpose computers are group of computers that can perform all types of operations or applications ranging from typing, graphics to internet applications. 1.4.2. Special purpose Special purpose computers are group of computers that are designed to perform specific operations or applications. For instance, in research institutions there are computers used for calculations only. You cannot such computers to type a document or draw. Examples are super computers- CRAY, mainframe computers-IBM. EXERCISE 1. Name the various generations of computers 2. Discuss the basic features of the fourth generation computers 3.
