CHAPTER ONE

CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS

c.       Slow
d.       Large in size (some up to the size of a room), and emit large amount of heat.
Examples of analogue computers are ENIAC, EDVAC, Step-Reckoner etc

1.2.2. Digital computers

a.       Digital computers comprised of the advanced and current computers.
b.       The circuits in these computers use binary numbers, 1 or 0 to process, store, and display or transfer data.
c.       They use integrated circuits- microchips, and microprocessors.
d.       These are high speed computers with large storage capacities and are smaller in size compared to analogue computers.
Examples of digital computers are Desk top, Laptop, PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) etc

1.2.3. Hybrid computers

Hybrid computers are big size computers. These computers have the features of both analogue and digital computers. Use in manufacturing industries.

1.3.    CLASSIFICATION BY SIZE

Based on their sizes, capacities and functions computers are classified into different groups. These groups are:-
1.3.1. Work station computers
1.3.2.   Super computers
1.3.3.   Mainframe-computer
1.3.4.   Minicomputer
1.3.5.   Personal computers
1.3.6. Personal Digital Assistants
1.3.7. Tablet/Notebooks
1.3.8. Laptops

1.3.1. Work station

Work stations are big size computers that are linked together, forming a network. Such computers are use in the industries and research institutions.
