CHAPTER ONE

CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS

Examples of the fourth generation computers are Altair 8800, Apple II, IBM, HP, Toshiba, Acer, Dell, Smart phones (GSM Handsets)

Advantages of fourth generation computers

Advantages of the fourth generation computers are:

1.       The fourth generation computers are reliable
2.       The fourth generation computers process data very fast
3.       The fourth generation computers are reduced in size
4.       The fourth generation computers can be use to form networks.
5.       The fourth generation computers are cheap.

1.1.5. Fifth generation computers

Fifth generation computers are still at the development stage. These computers called robots are expected to possess artificial intelligence that will enable to communicate with man. Below is the picture of a Robot.

1.2. CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS BY TYPES

Based on the type of technology use, computers are classified into three groups, namely:-
1.2.1. Analogue computers
1.2.2. Digital computers
1.2.3. Hybrid computers

1.2.1. Analogue Computers

a.       Analogue computers comprised of the first, second, third generation computers.
b.       They use decimal numbers (1.2, 2.1 1.3 etc) to process, store, display or transfer data.
c.       Some of the technologies use by these computers was vacuum tubes, transistors, water, steam and at times manual gears for operation.

`Limitations

Some of the limitations of the analogue computers are:
a.       Analogue computers were very noisy
b.       Analogue computers are expensive
