Performance objectives

By the end of this unit the students should be able to:

1.       Identify the various parts of the key board
2.       Use the keyboard to type
3.       Use the keyboard to navigate the various parts of the computer
4.       Identify the various parts of the mouse
5.       Use the mouse to navigate the various parts of the computer
6.       Identify the various parts of the computer monitor or desk top
7.       Start up a microcomputer system
8.       Shut down computer system
9.       Create, name, rename and save folders

UNIT ONE: THE KEYBOARD

3.1.    THE KEYBOARD

The keyboard is a rectangular plastic or rubber made material bearing keys with alphabets, figures and symbols. This structure enables the user to interact with the computer. Usually, keyboard is used for sending data into the computer.

3.1.1. Using the keyboard

3.1.1.1. Typing strategies

Before you start your typing work ensure that you have a chair that enables you to sit comfortably, with your back leaning on the back of the chair. Stretch your hands on the keyboard so as to avoid injury (RSI, this was discussed in chapter two of this book). Your legs should straight on the floor.

Using the Home keys

Usually, you start typing using the Home keys. You placed your hands left and right on the Home keys. The position of your fingers on the keys should be as follows:
1.       The left index finger will control the F and G keys, the right index finger will control the J and H keys.
