CHAPTER THREE

BASIC COMPUTER OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS

3.2.4. PROCESSES AND PROCEDURES

To operate a computer system one has to learn and acquire basic skills and techniques, which if lacking will certainly affect the performance and durability of the system. Processes or procedures therefore deals with the methods, skills employed when a person is operating the computer. These can be your work plan, your manuscripts, skills required the type of application software to use. It may also relate to the way you may want to use the outcome of your work from the computer- print, save, scan or send to email etc

3.2.5. DATA AND INFORMATION

Data and information are the items situated on the computer. These items can be stored by the user or the company. These ranged from your personal documents, files to installed softwares.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HARDWARE, SOFTWARE AND PEOPLE WARE

The relationship between hardware, software, peoplesware, data and processes is illustrated below.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INPUT DEVICES, OUTPUT DEVICES, STORAGE DEVICES AND THE DATA BUSES

Data is normally sent via electrical cables from the input devices- keyboard, mouse etc. The data is converted into electrical signals inside the cables/input devices before being transferred to the CPU. There are some materials within the CPU called buses-address and data buses. The address and data buses will carry the data to the arithmetic and logic unit under the control of the control unit.  After the arithmetic and logic unit has worked on the data it can be send to the register for storage or send to the output device- printer, speakers for display. This process is illustrated below.
