2.4. MEANING OF COMPUTER/INTERNET ETHICS

Computer ethics are the different types of rules, policies and procedures developed by various computer users, institutions or computer associations to ensure good practice and prevent unethical conduct of processes and procedures for professionals and computer users. Computer ethics are design by schools, institutions and computer associations.

2.4.1. International computer associations

Associations that set ethical standards for the production of computer components, conduct of computer professionals etc in different parts of the world. Some of the well known associations are:

2.4.2. British Computer Society

The British Computer Society is responsible for controlling and coordinating the activities of all computer professionals in Britain. The society published code of conduct and code of practice in Britain.

Some of the areas where computers are misused are:

2.5.3. Fraud/Stealing
2.5.4. Pornography
2.5.5. Cyber war
2.5.6. Piracy of softwares
2.5.7. Plagiarism

2.5.1. Invasion of privacy

Invasion of privacy of individuals is having access to private activities/private life, documents, information of people without their knowledge or consent. For instance, some users of internet can access the e-mail of a person and retrieved vital documents for his or her use.  Similarly video cameras are used as surveillance equipment’s to track the activities of influential people in the society.
