13.1.3. Invention of computer

Invention of the computer has great impact on the way data and information is recorded, recorded and transmitted. For instance with your GSM phone you can talk to someone in the United States of America anytime, anywhere. Similarly, with the internet you can access books, journals, videos online and retrieve information.

13.1.3.1. Impact of the Computer on information transmission

Some of the most important impact of the invention of the computer are:

  1. It aided in the storage of data and information
  2. It enable the transfer of information over long distances, spanning hundreds of thousands of kilometers- you can send and receive text messages, pictures, videos, books from different countries which are thousands of kilometers away.
  3. It enable the efficient sharing of data and information between governments, business communities etc

13.1.4. Linking up of computers to form networks

Computers can work as a group to form network and at the same time they can work independently. Basically there are three types of networks:

13.1.4.1. Local area Network

13.1.4.2. Wide area Network

13.1.4.1. Local area Network

Such networks can be within an organization say a school or ministry. Such network is called intranet. Computers of both the intranet contain data and information in form of books, journals, news magazines, videos, audio etc.

13.1.4.2. Wide area Network

Wide Area Network comprised of different computers in different parts of the world. E.g the internet. Internet composed of computers based in different parts of the world. Computers of both the internet contain data and information in form of books, journals, news magazines, videos, audio etc.
