UNIT ONE: SPREADSHEETS

3.1. DEFINITION OF SPREADSHEETS

Spreadsheets are application packages used for database management. Spreadsheets are used for the storage of data and information, data analysis, data presentation (production of reports), graphs etc Spreadsheet comprised of cells- group of rows and columns. Each cell can hold data or information- text or figures etc.

3.1.1. EXAMPLES OF SPREADSHEETS

Some of the most common spreadsheets are:
i. Lotus 1, 2, 3
ii. Excel
iii. STATVIEW
iv. Open office

3.1.2. USES OF SPREADSHEETS

Some the uses of spreadsheets are:
3.1.3.1. Management of data
3.1.3.2. Preparation of daily sales
3.1.3.3. Budget
3.1.3.4. Management of Examination results

3.1.3. EXAMPLE OF SPREADSHEETS- MICROSOFT EXCEL 2007

The spreadsheet package use in this book for demonstrating how to use spreadsheets
is Microsoft Excel 2007.
3.1.4. SPREADSHEET FEATURES AND TERMINOLOGIES
Spreadsheets comprised of different sections which have different names and uses.
Some of the sections and their terminologies used in databases are:-

3.1.4.3. Cells
3.1.4.4. Row
3.1.4.5. Column

A worksheet is a single spreadsheet page consisting of several rows and columns
