THE SKIN

Introduction

The skin is the largest organ in the body. It is the outermost coveing of the body of animals. It is approximately 12-15% of body weight. The forms a continuous covering/lining of the mucous membranes of the the mouth, anus, urethra, and vagina.

Functions of the skin

Some of the functions of the skin are:

  1. Maintenance of homeostasis
  2. Protections against microorganisms regulation of body temperature
  3. Retards water loss
  4. Houses sensory receptors
  5. Synthesis of chemicals
  6. Excretion of small amounts of waste

PARTS OF THE SKIN

There are two separate layers of the skin

1. Epidermis

2. Dermis
