ADRENAL GLAND
Hormones of the Adrenal Medulla
The adrenal medulla secretes two hormones:
a.Epinephrine
b. Norepinephrine
FEATURES
-
The effects of these hormones resemble those of the sympathetic division neurotransmitters of the same name, except that they last up to 10 times longer when they are secreted as hormones.
-
They are called flight or fight hormones. This is because they are used in times of stress and for “fight or flight.”
-
Release of medullary hormones is regulated by nervous impulses from the central nervous system.
FUNCTIONS
- Some of the functions of the adreanl medulla hormones are:
Increased blood pressure due to increased heart rate & constriction of blood vessels.
- Increased respiratory rate and dilation of bronchioles.
- Increased blood sugar and cellular metabolism.
- Decreased digestive tract activity.
