5.0. INTRODUCTION

The various metabolic processes such as respiration, excretion, reproduction, digestion etc require energy. Such energy are obtained from the breaking down of food substances such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids etc. these food foods are usually produced in the small intestine and other parts of the body. However, they are needed in (a most of the times ) distance part of the body such as the brain, muscles of the leg or arm. The circulatory system helps in the transportation of such product of digestion to the distance parts of the body- organs, tissues etc

5.1. DEFINTITION OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

The circulatory system is the system of cells, tissues, organs and systems that are used in the transportation of digested food substances and other materials from one of the body to another. It is also important in protecting the body from diseases.

5.2. FUNCTIONS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM.

The circulatory system serves alot of functions in man. Some of the most important functions of the circulatory system are:

1. Transport of digested food materials such as glucose, fatty acids, glycerol, amino acids etc
2. Transport of hormones
3. Transport of salts- Potassiun
4. Transport of wastes metabolic products such as urea, carbon dioxide etc
5. Transport of blood cells- Red, blood cells, white blood cells etc.
6. Protection of body from diseases-white blood cells, lymphocytes, lynph nodes etc

5.3. TYPES CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

1. Blood circulatory system.

2. Lymphatic system
